Beth Lapides is an alt comedy guru, author, yogi and creator of the groundbreaking comedy show Un-Cabaret and The Comedian's Way workshop. In her new show "100% Happy 88% of the Time" she navigates the slippery slope of these rapidly changing times on pages, stages, screens. And she does it with an upward facing attitude.
Beth's blog reflects her wide ranging interests and her feeling that despite the insane level of difficulty, The World Is So Exciting Right Now! She connects woo-woo with edge science and the spiritual frontier to daily life. She interprets, questions, deconstructs, inspires and analyzes. And she does it in all high heels. Or in barefeet. But never in flats!
Beth is one of the yoga-friendliest entertainers working in America today.
Her mind-expanding new theater show 100% Happy 88% of the Time has been performed at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Sotckbridge Mass. at Urban Yoga Palm Springs, Yogi Tree in Los Angeles as well as more traditional entertainment venues. The Accidental Yogi, yogamates.com and Whole Life Times have all given her big thumbs up.
The Column - Beth writes a very personal monthly column for LA Yoga Magazine about living yogically off the mat and deepening your practice on the mat. It's full of upward-facing comedy and yogic insights.
The License Plate Frame - Before the column there was the license plate frame. Beth got tired of reading ads for car dealers on the license plate frames of cars in front of her. She didn't want to contribute to that ad-vironment and decided to make her own My Other Car Is A Yoga Mat frames. They're made of recycled plastic in the USA. Perfect gift for your favorite yogi, even if your favorite yogi is you:)
Yogamates TV did this interview with Beth and her partner Greg Miller during the Fit Yoga Conference where they were teaching "Enlighten Up: Using Comedy as a Yoga Teaching Tool", a workshop geared to getting yoga teachers to get out of "yoga teacher voice" and into a more authentic, true voice of their own. As Beth says, "the rhythm of your voice is the the wave your inner truth surfs on." We each have a unique physical voice and we have to learn how to hear it and develop it.
"Beth and Greg see right through the foundational blocks that are in the way of any type of speaker/performer. In my Yoga Tune Up® Teacher Training, they supercharged the awareness of all the trainees, who were completely transformed by Beth and Greg's insights. Yoga teachers are public speakers who must be able to reach into the hearts and souls of their students'. Beth and Greg filled my teachers with compassionate confidence and the playful permission to be the unique leaders they are.". - Jill Miller, Equinox Yoga Tune Up®.
The Comedians Way is a workshop for writers, performers and other humans to develop your seventh sense, your Sense of Humor. Discover the spiritual practice of giving laughs (as opposed to getting them), increase the joy in your own experience and make life more fun for others. She taught it at Kripalu in 2010 and will return to teach it again on Memorial Day weekend and July 10-15, 2011.
You're so negative for a postive person he said. "No, I'm not!"
One of the things she loves about the anusura practice is it's life affirming, positive, though un-simplistic attitude.
Beth found Siva Baba's Chant to Remove All Negativity and has been working with it and having great results. Although she calls it The Chant To Remove 88% of Negativity. Is that negative? Here's a video of her sharing it during a show at Highways Performance Space in LA:
In these MP3's Dattatreya Siva Baba explains the significance of the Sharaba and the meaning of the mantra line by line (while chanting it) and then chants it repeatedly for 30 minutes. And then is joined by a group chanting for 30 minutes. He also has phonetics of the chant on the site. This is how Beth learned it. Of course you can use the phonetics and watch her youtube video as well!

YOGA THERAPY BALLS
Beth met Jill Miller (no relation to Greg - except through affection!) last year when they were both doing workshops at a FitYoga convention (see below). Jill recognized Beth because she'd been coming to the Un-Cab for years and Beth recognized Jill because she had been looking forward to Jill's shakti shoulder workshop so desperately.
Like most writers, Beth has to take care of her shoulders (and back and wrists). Jill's workshop gave her some of the tools she needed to do that. And one of those tools is a great set of balls! Rolling on balls is a well known therapy for back care. And in a pinch, or to try it out, you can definitely use spaldeens or tennis balls.
But Jill has made these Yoga Tune Up balls to her specifications, with a great deal of care to the perfect amount of give. These magic yoga therapy balls for back, neck, wrist and shoulder pain also come with a pdf chart and a CD on which Jill talks you through a half hour session. You dont need to listen to the CD more than once or twice, you'll soon learn how to target your own person trouble spots. Jill also suggests using them during air travel and Beth uses them whenever she's in the passengers seat of the car.
